A Chico woman plans to use "pedal power" to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Mary Rumiano hopes to raise ten thousand dollars by riding in all four of lance armstrong's "Livestrong" challenges.
Rumiano lost her dad, then mom to cancer...along with other family and friends. Inspired by fellow cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong... Rumiano is raising money for his foundation, which promotes support and awareness in the fight against cancer. "Lance Armstrong Foundation. 93 percent of every dollar goes toward helping cancer survivors and people who're suffering right now."
Rumiano has ridden in several of the "Livestrong" challenges in recent years...raising about six thousand dollars in all. But she's taking her passion for for pedalling to a whole new level this year, as her next birthday will mark a milestone, "I thought it would be a good 50th year gift to the cancer community to raise as much money as possible to help the cause."
Two weeks ago Rumiano pedalled 100 miles at the Seattle "Livestrong" challenge. And she plans to do the same in San Jose July 12th....followed by two other challenges in Philadelphia, and Austin. She loves cycling...regularly riding 60 miles a week,"Physically long way in a shorter period of time, compared to running. and it's not as hard on the body. Mentally, my therapy. lots of thinking. Mostly ride by myself."Mary also volunteers for Greyhound Rescue and Habitat for Humanity. But she plans to make time in her busy schedule to follow Lance Armstrong's progress in the Tour de' France, which starts Sunday.
