Jessica Gallaway, Sierra Smallwood, and Brook Barney didn't mind giving up a Saturday in May for their student government project.
The Marsh Junior High School students decided they would collect money to help cancer victims and survivors.
The choice....came easy.
Sierra said, "a lot of us have had relatives who have had breast cancer"
So the girls and some friends painted pink signs, made special t-shirts and parked themselves in front of the Target parking lot...and who could resist their charm.
Brooke said, "they would smile at us and I would shake my sign, and they would eventually pull out their wallets and give us some money."
It only took three and a half hours to raise more than 700 dollars.
Brooke said, "I think it surprised all of us how much money we were going to make"
And it surprised the staff at the American Cancer Society, when the girls showed up at the office to turn in their earnings.
Jessica said, "I gave it to a lady who had breast cancer and she was a survivor, and she was crying. She was really surprised for how young we are that we could raise that much money"
The girls also raised awareness about the need for a cure....posting themselves at the perfect spot on one of Chico's busiest streets.
And as they found out...you're never too young to make a difference.
Sierra said, "it makes me feel really good because I'm helping a lot of people and because I did that somebody might not have cancer anymore.
