One out of every three kids in the United States today is considered to be overweight...and that number is growing.

Reporter Rick Carhart takes us to one Shasta County elementary school whose students are determined not to "fit" into that trend..

Parker says, "you need to exercise a lot to stay healthy"

Fourth grader Parker Martin is getting a leg up on physical fitness.

Parker says, "I think it was good for me...it was easy for me because I go outside a lot and play."

Bella Vista Elementary School recently completed the Governor's Challenge...a competition designed to encourage kids to be fit and healthy.

Julie says, "the kids are required to complete a calendar where they are doing physical fitness 30-60 minutes a day, 3 times a week for a month"

Madeleine says, "you put all the days together and turn it in to the Governor and you get a big prize"

And get a big prize they did...six thousand dollars worth of physical education equipment for the school. PE teacher Julie Reuter says the school plans to buy 35 copies of the Wii "Dance Dance Revolution" video game.

Julie says, "they learn about physical fitness, they're asking questions about it and they can't wait to tell me when they come in to PE what they did over the weekend"

In order to win the prize... every one of the 430 students had to do their part.

Julie says, "they made it easy because they were really motivated to win this challenge."

So what activities did the kids do?

Parker says, "my parents made me go outside for 30 minutes"

Julie says, "jump roping, walking around, hula hoop"

Madeleine says, "I did softball"

In the end...all their hard work was well worth the effort

Parker says, "I feel good about it because we get a prize"

Madeleine says, "we should all be really grateful that we put all our teamwork together and got this one big prize that we can all use and share."

Julie says, "we're all very proud of them."

An entire school full of "kids in action"...in Shasta County, I'm Rick Carhart for Action News.
