"I was honored to get nominated...it's a once in a lifetime chance."
Sixteen-year old Tyler Sweet is only a Junior in High School...but he already knows what he wants to do when he grows up.
Tyler says, "I'm interested in either a career in law enforcement...or I'd like to be involved with computer government issues."
This week Tyler is one of a very select group of high school students nationwide traveling to Washington, D.C. for the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law and Crime Scene Investigations.
Tyler says, "we see sites and learn about government issues, talk about national events...national security."
Back at home in Redding...Tyler is busy working toward his future career...he carries a 3.5 grade point average and is a member of the Redding Police Explorers...a group of volunteers who assist law enforcement at special events like the recent Redding Air Show and this week's "Big Bike Weekend".
Tyler says, "it will definitely help us out if we want a future career in law enforcement."
Tyler's mom, Kristine, isn't surprised that her son would be selected for the program.
Kristine says, "he's a really good kid...listens well...active...he's had an interest in law for a while so he's pursuing it further."
Tyler has had to raise his own money for the trip...around 1900 dollars...and he'll be traveling by himself...showing a maturity beyond his years.
Tyler says, "I'm hoping it will be a good experience...hoping I'll meet some people, make some new friends."
And this young man understands the opportunity he has been given...and offers some advice to the rest of us.
Tyler says, "try your hardest...try your best at everything...if you get a once in a lifetime chance, take it because you might not get it again."
