A high speed chase from south Redding to Cottonwood ended with a CHP helicopterco-pilot making the arrest.

According to the CHP, officers tried to pull over a man in a stolen vehicle near Knighton Road yesterday afternoon, but he took off.

Authorities say the car chase ended in Cottonwood with the suspect running off into the Cottonwood Creek Drainage.

A CHP helicopter followed him as ran towards a parked jeep with a woman and two girls sun bathing nearby.

Therewere no ground officers close, so the pilot landed and the co-pilot, Officer Ken Tyler, got out and arrested the suspect.

“We try to have an aircraft either, airplane or helicopter, overhead a pursuit anytime we can, when one is available, because it affords greater safety to the public and as well as our ground officers, but for us to actually land and take a suspect into custody doesn’t happen very often,” says Aerial Supervisor, Steve Youngs.

Leonard Cromp, an 18-year-old transient, was booked into the Shasta County Jail on suspicion of vehicle theft and drug possession.
