Connecting with someone who cares can make all the difference for an adult with developmental disabilities. And making that connection is one of the goals of a new mentor program, that's just getting underway in the North State.

California MENTOR is a program that has been around for nearly 30 years ... operating in 35 states. Lee Laney has been hired as the local Program Manager, to make it happen here.

California MENTOR provides residential services for local adults with developmental disabilities.  They are matched with, and live with mentor families.  Lee Laney says, "It provides greater integration in community, and closer attention with a one on one relationship."

Clients are referred from the Far Northern Regional Center. Mentors receive ongoing support, and a monthly reimbursement stipend. "Mentors are people who find satisfaction in helping others. They may or may not have experience working with adults with developmental disabilities. If not, that's fine. I think it's their heart that brings them to it and that's what we'll gauge in terms of their suitablity for the work", adds Laney.

The program is recruiting families to serve clientele in some nine area counties.  The matches made by California MENTOR are not intended to be short term, or transitional.  But instead, relationships that can last a life time. "We are a matchmaker, voluntary on both sides".

If you're interested in becoming a mentor, contact the california mentor program at 892-9200, or visit www.thementornetwork.com.###
