A house fire in north
Chico claimed the life of a dog Thursday night.
The fire broke out just before
8 p.m. in a bedroom at the home on
Alba Avenue, near Highway 99 and
East Avenue.
The home is rented by three Chico State students. None of the young women were home at the time. It was a neighbor who spotted smoke coming from the house and called 911.
Fire fighters were able to contain the flames to the one bedroom, but the entire house was filled with smoke. The pet dog of one of the tenants was found dead from smoke inhalation. Investigators are now trying to figure out what started the fire.
