A Chico woman got a surprise celebration after her recent victory at a triathlon in Australia. The Chico Soroptimist Club cheered on member Margaret Bomberg at the club's Wednesday meeting. Bomberg recently returned from Australia, having captured the World Triathlon Association's Senior Division Championship. She beat out senior athletes from 70 other nations in swimming, biking and running.
After the club greeted her with cheers and American flags, Bomberg was asked to take a victory lap around her fellow Soroptimist friends during their meeting at the Elks Lodge. Bomberg told Action News "It was a big surprise. I walked in and there were all these little flags and I thought, 'this is early for Veterans Day.' I had no idea what this was about."
The 72-year-old widow has five children and six grandchildren. Bomberg says her family DNA, combined with her workout routine will keep her healthy for years to come.
