Dozens of Chico Unified School District employees' jobs are on the chopping block. The board of trustees will be asked to approve a measure, Wednesday, and when it does, the budget ax will fall. More than 40 temporary employees and several administrators may receive pink slips, March 15th. CUSD Assistant Principal Bob Feaster explained, "We have a legal obligation to notify them on March 15th to confirm that they won't be needed next year."

For the more than 40 temporary employees, this procedure is nothing new because they receive a release letter every school year. But administrators have not received them, until now. Feaster said, "We've identified the people who might be affected and will notify them as well if the board approves the resolution."

These possible layoffs are in addition to those 70- permanent positions announced in February. "As a result of that, a number of permanent and probationary teachers will receive layoff notices on or before March 15th. The difference is these are people who aren't temporary with us that will get that same similar notice that they may not be back next year," said Feaster.

The possible layoffs are all in an effort to cut 2.5 million dollars from the district's 2010- 2011 school year budget. Board officials say the number of possible layoffs could drop dramatically, due to workers retiring or filling different positions.
