The blaze was first reported around 7:30am Thursday morning.  According to Cal Fire, when crews arrived on scene, they didn't see smoke.  But when they opened a door to the building, smoke came billowing out.  They battled the blaze for several hours.  An interior structure collapsed due to heat, so firefighters were pulled out of the building.
It is not yet known how the fire started, but a spokesperson with the plant says it may have started in the control room.  Kevin Wright, a water services supervisor, says there will likely be no disruption to power in the area.  It feeds the grid run by PG&E.
No one was inside the plant when the fire broke out.  Cal Fire says up to 40 firefighters were on scene throughout the day.  The Red Cross showed up to bring firefighters food.  Two engines will remain on scene round-the-clock for five days, monitoring the building.
