The Paradise couple accused of fatally beating their adopted 7 year old daughter enter pleas of not guilty to murder charges. Kevin and Elizabeth Schatz appeared in Butte County Court on Thursday. The Paradise couple is facing murder and torture charges. Prosecutors say the Schatz repeatedly hit their children with plastic tubing as a form of punishment. Those alleged beatings eventually led to rhabdomyolsis, a breakdown of the girl's muscle releasing by-products into her blood stream damaging her kidneys.
Kevin Schatz's attorney Michael Harvey says he is still going through all of the documents. "We have heard what the district attorney has said and is saying. We are exploring extensively, my office, other explanations for the death of this child, and until we have explored and investigated all of that, I will have no further comments."
The Schatz are due back in court in mid April. The couple's eight children remain in foster care.
