A north state police chief is going into early retirement to save more positions in the department.

Thursday was Red Bluff Police Chief Scott Capilla's last day on the job.

After 26 years on the force and two as police chief, Capilla opted out of his contract with the city to prevent further layoffs the department is already facing.

Captain Paul Nanfito will serve as the Interim Chief until the city has enough funding to hire on another full time police chief.

Nanfito faces a major challenge in maintaining the level of public service with fewer officers.

He says, “It's going to be challenging for the staff at Red Bluff PD to meet all the citizens needs, with less resources. It's another case of doing more with less.”

And there will be less staff in August, when three more employees will be laid off.

Nanfito assumes his official position as Interim Chief July 4th.
