A Citrus Heights man is being held in Butte County Jail on $1 million bail on suspicion of the brutal beating of a Shasta College student early Sunday morning in Chico.

Chico Police say 21-year-old Tyler Burton is suffering from life-threatening head injuries at Enloe Medical Center.

Police say Burton was found near West 8th and Ivy streets around 1:15 a.m. Sunday as several bystanders were trying to take care of his injuries. According to witness, Burton was with friends as they were confronted by another group and a fight broke out.

As Burton was rushed to the hospital, police began looking for a suspect. Soon after, police located 20-year-old Andres Rodriguez of Citrus Heights. Rodriguez, who is not a student, was arrested on suspicion of assault with great bodily injury. There's no word on what started the fight.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact the Chico Police Department Detective Bureau at 897-5820 during business hours or 895-4911 during non-business hours
