A graduate of the school, who joined the marine corps last year, was killed in a training accident in Southern California. Family members of Private First Class Casey Holmes confirmed the 20-year-old Marine was killed last night while participating in training maneuvers at 29 Palms' Marine Combat Training Center. Holmes was born and raised in Chico, graduating from Chico High School in 2011. He participated in several sports including basketball, football and swimming. A family spokesperson told me tonight he joined the marine corps last May. He was considered the most physically fit Marine in his company during basic training; scoring a perfect 300 for physical fitness. After completing basic training in August, Holmes was stationed in Hawaii. He'd spent the last four weeks training in 29 Palms. We do not know the specifics on the nature of the accident that claimed his life last night. Family members last saw Casey on Christmas. They did not want to speak on camera this evening, but they did release a statement which included these words:

"Casey is remembered for his tenacity of spirit and his loving nature. Casey dearly loved his family and friends. Casey was happy to serve his country and was proud of his success in the marine corps."

A family spokesperson said it's unknown when Casey Holmes's body will return to Chico. The funeral may take place a week from Saturday, but that has not been determined.
