In our latest Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week, we profile a young kicker from Orland high school whose got a leg up on the competition in the classroom and on the football field.
Drive....it's what separates the great ones from the good ones and Orland high senior Aldrick Rosas takes the word to new levels."I'm always driven to be better than I was yesterday, you should always strive to be the best you can be," said Rosas.
"He really pushes it hard. After working out for 2-3 hours for practice he's back out here kicking until dark, asking for lights to be on with his kicking coach. He's just a really driven athlete," said Orland football coach Mike McDonald.
Rosas has played 4 sports during his time as a Trojan, participating in track, tennis, soccer, and football. Yet despite dedicating so much energy to athletics, Rosas still makes sure to stay on top of his studies. He currently carries a 3.6 GPA.
"You know when you get good grades, a lot of younger classmen look up to you, I don't know, it's a good feeling to have good grades," said Rosas.
This Fall, Rosas has split time between training for the upcoming soccer season as well as kicking for the football team.
Despite the obvious differences in the two sports, Rosas says that both benefit one another through similar types of training.
"Kicking a ball is pretty much technique and how quick you can get your leg to explode to the ball, so a lot of weighted lunges, a lot of bleacher runs and a lot of 100-meter dashes," said Rosas.
Those workouts have translated into a ton of success for Rosas at the kicker position. He owns the Northern Section single season touchback record and he can also consistently make field goals upwards of fifty yards. His long came last year, a 55-yarder against Wheatland.
"He's really determined and driven by getting this kicking down and he really pushes it hard," said McDonald.
In the future, Aldrick would like to play either football or soccer at a four-year school.
Whatever path he chooses, one thing's for sure, like the ball coming off his foot, this Orland Trojan has the ability to go far. Aldrick Rosas is our Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week.
