Our latest Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week is a young lady of many talents for the Hamilton high volleyball team. Audra Jones does it all, from spiking to serving and everything in between, all while trying to lead the Braves to a fifth consecutive section title.
Audra Jones had plenty of interests growing up, but when she hit the volleyball for the first time in the fifth grade she was hooked.
"The first time i touched the ball I knew I wanted to continue playing the sport, I love to play volleyball, it's just really fun to me," said Jones.
It sure helps when you stand six-foot-five. Jones towers over her competition and this senior does it all for Hamilton's volleyball program, from outside hitting to blocking, all while carrying a modest approach.
"She's kind of a coach figure for us, like we can go to her and ask her for help and not feel like she's being cocky about it," said Hamilton volleyball player Erica Mercado.
"I'm a real humble person so I don't like to have the spotlight on me," said Jones.
However, when it comes to production Jones can't shake the spotlight, she shines. This four-year-varsity player currently leads the Northern Section in hitting percentage at .497, but, the Braves 14-6 overall record is a little more important to Jones, as well as her weighted 4.17 GPA.
"I'm an academic first person. I really like to get straight A's and if I don't, it bothers me, so I really do like to do my homework, keep my grades up and concentrate a lot on my school work. It's my goal to kind of help our team keep that goal of strive for five, we really want to get another section championship, so we're working towards that," said Jones.
If that proves to be the case, it will definitely be this dominant force on the front-line leading the way.
