A gas leak near Chico's Bidwell Park forced the evacuation of nearby neighborhoods and closure of several roads. It happened around 8am Thursday at East 8th Street and El Monte Road, along the south side of Bidwell Park. Construction crews were digging when they hit a 4 inch gas main. Firefighters evacuated the surrounding neighborhood along with a nearby church and preschool. Nearby roads were also closed, including East 8th Street between El Monte and Bruce Road, and parts of Burlingame and South Park Drive. Emergency responders tell Action News they were being especially cautious to prevent any open flame in the area, that could cause an explosion.
It took crews from PG&E about 3 hours to shut off the main. Thursday afternoon, residents were allowed to return.
