Defining dislocation

Set Text Size SmallSet Text Size MediumSet Text Size LargeSet Text Size X-Large
If you've dislocated a bone, you can usually tell just by looking at it. Dislocations are very serious injuries in which the bone moves out of its proper alignment. The deformity is generally obvious, characterized by swelling, discoloration, and excruciating pain. If you think you've dislocated a bone, don't try to relocate it yourself. You'll probably do more damage than good. Put ice on the injured area and go directly to your physician or to a hospital. Be sure not to eat or drink anything in case the doctor uses anesthesia while relocating the joint. A physician can prescribe appropriate rehabilitation, generally including plenty of rest and proper support for the injury while it heals. Consult a doctor in your area for more information about dislocation.
