When should I test my water?

If your water develops an odd color, a bad odor, or people in your family suffer repeated, unexplained illnesses, it's wise to test your water immediately. Otherwise, the frequency will depend on your water source. Water that comes from a municipal supply, it is probably already being tested. However, this may vary from once a week, to once a month, or less. It's best to check your water every time you move to a new residence; this way, you'll have a basis for comparison. Then, re-test it every three years, unless the quality changes. The situation is different for those on a private well. Because the government is not responsible for monitoring such sources, it's vital that you do so. Have the local health department check the well every six months for nitrates and coliform bacteria. If these elements are present, the water could have other contaminants, too. However, water that's free of bacteria may still contain other dangerous organisms. You'll also want to check for substances like pesticides, herbicides, and metals, about once a year. For more information on testing your water, contact the nearest water or health department.
