The H1N1 virus is gaining momentum on the Chico State campus. The University has confirmed 2 students have the swine flu, and more than 80 students are sick with flu-like symptoms.
Although the students aren't all tested for swine flu, based on symptoms and the early-season spike in cases, nurses assume the students have the swine flu.
The swine flu seems to be affecting a younger population, ages 25 and under, because many have not been exposed to the influenza virus.
The University is pushing flu prevention practices to keep the outbreak at bay.
Nursing Supervisor at the Student Health Center Christine Holt says, “It's really important to remember to not go to class, you will infect everyone in class with would be a bummer for everybody.”
Student and health education intern Robin George says, “Just seeing that people are getting better, people are a lot less scared now than they were in the spring when the swine flu first started spreading.”
Flu shots are free for students, but the vaccine is almost gone.
Student health services expect to receive the H1N1 vaccine in mid-October.
