A Butte County cracker company is at the center of a federal immigration investigation.
Immigration agents served a search warrant at Mary’s Gone Crackers in Gridley on Thursday.
The search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation into the organic cracker and cookie maker’s alleged employment of dozens of illegal immigrants.
According to the search warrant, investigators found that 49 of the company’s 159 did not have the proper documentation during a search of company records in April of 2012.
A short time later an employee reportedly told agents that 48 of the employees had resigned or been fired, with one employee providing the proper paperwork.
Agents say in July, a confidential source inside the Gridley facility reported that 12 of the employees had returned to work under aliases and fraudulent social security numbers, just one week after the initial firing.
Agents say they then did surveillance of the facility to gather evidence of the alleged illegal activity, before obtaining a warrant for Thursday’s search.
Nobody has been charged at this point, but investigators are processing records obtained during the search.
