Our latest Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week may be young, but she is quickly getting used to leaving the competition in the rear-view mirror on the course at West Valley high.

It was last Thursday afternoon, the wind was swirling and the hail was pelting all the girls in the Northern Section Cross Country Championships at West Valley high.

As the storm and the race carried on, it was only fitting that a girl by the name of Jenna Storms, was storming to the finish line in first place.

"We're always expecting some type of weather out of West Valley, whether it be burning sun or hailstorm, there's always something going on around here," said Storms.

Storms won the wet and windy 3-mile race with a time of 19 minutes, 12 seconds. She also helped West Valley capture the team title. Cross country coach Scott Fairley says the sophomore Storms is quickly becoming a superstar.

"She ran 18 minutes and 38 seconds on our course earlier this year, which is the fourth fastest ever by a Northern Section athlete and so that's pretty exciting to have a sophomore do something like that," says Fairley.

Those numbers don't happen by accident. Running isn't a hobby for Storms, it's a lifestyle and it gives her a sense of accomplishment.

"It's the feeling afterwards, you might feel pain now, you might feel it later, but it's just the feeling, I can go out and do this, I can put my body and know it will come through," says Storms.

When it comes to her studies, Storms is also leaving the competition in the dust. She's ranked near the top of her class with a 3.86 GPA.

Ross Field asks, "why do you take so much pride in being a good student?"

"It just seems healthy to try and keep expanding your mind-frame," replies Storms.

Eventually, this Eagle plans on earning a scholarship to run at a 4-year university, and with all that she's already accomplished in just one and a half years of high school, it's safe to say, for Storms, there's blue skies on the horizon. Jenna Storms is our latest Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week.
