SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Officials are advising people to avoid contact with the waters of San Francisco Bay after an oil spill.

City officials said Friday people should refrain from swimming in the Bay and stay away from beaches. Fishing around Treasure Island, Yerba Buena Island and from the east side of San Francisco Pier 39 to Candlestick Point is also not advised.

Mayor Gavin Newsom says hundreds of gallons of fuel spilled from the oil tanker Dubai Star when a fuel line ruptured during a fuel transfer. The incident occurred about 2½ miles southeast of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

The Coast Guard says an initial investigation reveals the failure was mechanical.

So far the oil has not reached shore and there are no reports of oiled wildlife.
