Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - It appears the Scott Gomez era in Montreal is drawing to a close.

Shortly after the Montreal Canadiens opened camp, general manager Marc Bergevin announced that the veteran center will not play for the club this season. Bergevin added Gomez will have his contract bought out this summer.

Gomez has the highest cap hit on the Canadiens at $7.36 million and is coming off the worst season of his career, with just two goals and 11 points in 38 games.

The 33-year-old has underperformed since Montreal acquired him from the New York Rangers following the 2008-09 season. After a 12-goal, 47-assist campaign, the Alaska native's numbers dropped to seven and 31 in 2010-11. He also had a minus-15 rating.

A two-time Stanley Cup champion with New Jersey, Gomez has registered 169 goals and 686 points in 902 career games with the Devils, Rangers and Canadiens.
